Asshole is an understatement. That thing needs to be relegated to the ocean to flounder in its icy depths for all eternity.

You’d be a miserable little shit if you were born with genes like his. I mean the dude is 5ft 7, perfect example of short man syndrome.

F1 driving isn’t a Job, it’s a career, a lifetime achievement, a dedication, a lifestyle, a dream for millions of people who will never come close.

But a JOB as in a means to make money and support your family? nope.

Putin is right, everyone else is asshole.

He is kleptocrat-in-chief in probably the largest kleptocracy in the world. Billions squirreled away, while many of his people are hungry and cold.

He totally didn’t mean it that way though. It was 100% meant as a jab at both F1 and it’s drivers.

I agree he’s an asshole, but for the fun of devil’s advocate - maybe it meant it as in “If you consider it a job” in the theory of “if you find a job you love you never work a day” or something.

But yeah he’s a bit of a dick.

does he? in the video the emotion on Putin’s makes it seem more jovial, awkward as you’d expect, but I don’t see anything other than polite small talk.

I took more as a small talk joke then an actual dog on the driver. He is probably jealous!

It’s possible to take a swipe at someone/thing while sporting a smile on your face, even in the middle of pleasant conversation. ‘If you can even call what you guys do a job’ in context means F1 drivers don’t really work.

Come to think of it, it doesn’t really make sense to say ‘well he meant that it’s a career, not a job’ given that building a career is also hard work; it’s a job you must do in addition to whatever expectations you must meet in accordance with the work you’ve agreed to do. I know it’s common to think of a career as something more than a job, but they aren’t separate like that. Having a career also means having a job. Not having a job means being unemployed. There’s no real reason to call out the functions performed by what are clearly employees of an organization as not being a ‘real job’ without trying to imply that what you think they do doesn’t qualify as work.

I also think it’s possible to read way too much into small talk. Especially when it’s not in our native language.

I’d agree if the swipe was something burried under a mountain of context and required interpretation and exaggeration to see but...it really doesn’t. The meaning is right there on the surface. I also don’t buy the language barrier excuse given who was speaking. Am I really supposed to believe the Ex-KGB man who broke fingers for a living, executes political opponents when he doesn’t jail them and rigs elections for himself and his friends would hesitate to take a swipe at F1 if he wanted to? Even less believeable is the idea that the translator could misrepresent what this man said and somehow not get chided on the spot for it. Or live to translate anything again for that matter.

I believe, Putin just meant that driving an F1 car is so much fun, it mustn’t be like a job.

Your argument still hinges on the crux that “if he wants to”, and I can’t see why Putin would want to take an overt jab at F1 at large when he’s spent so much money and effort into building Sochi into an international sporting city. Even if you buy into the idea that he’s a deranged dictator on the verge of bringing Russia into a new age of the iron curtain.
